INDIAN EMBASSY IN KABUL TARGETED AGAIN

At least 17 people have been killed, on Thursday 10/08/2009 morning, and more than 80 injured in a large explosion between the Indian embassy and the interior ministry in the Afghan capital, Kabul (see also – Kabul 08.18.09 ). An Indian embassy official said a part of a security wall had been damaged.

Nirupama Rao, India’s foreign secretary told reporters, he believed “the suicide bomb was directed against the Indian embassy”.  Three Indian paramilitary troops guarding the embassy received minor shrapnel injuries, he added. Afghani Intelligence officials claimed the target was, indeed, the Indian embassy.

The blast, which occurred at 08:27 local busy working time, appeared to be the work of a suicide bomber. A policeman at the scene told Reuters news agency that the explosion happened inside a car.

In July 2008 a suicide bomber has rammed a car full of explosives into the gates of the Indian embassy in Kabul, killing 41 people and injuring 141 (see – INDIAN Embassy Bombing).
