TALIBAN KILLED 6 UN WORKERS IN KABUL

Two days after 14 Americans were killed in Afghanistan in a series of helicopter air crashes (see – Badghis 10.26.09) and a day after yet another 8 soldiers were killed in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province in two separate roadside bomb attacks, Taliban fighters raided, on Wednesday 10/28/2009 at about 07:00, a guesthouse used by the UN in the center of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital.

At least 6 UN employees have been killed in an attack in the centre of the Afghan capital Kabul, the UN confirmed. According to the Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary 3 attackers were killed too.

The attack, for which the Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility, comes 10 days before the second round of presidential elections is due to be held. Later rockets were fired at the Serena Hotel in Kabul, which is used by diplomats and other foreigners ( see also – Kabul 10.08.09 ).

There is no information yet on whether anyone has been injured or killed at the hotel, but about 100 people inside at the time were taken to secure rooms.

October 2009 is the deadliest month for USA troops in Afghanistan since the beginning of the war in 11/2001 (Operation Absolute Justice) with 54 Americans killed in action.
