12 KILLED IN LAHORE HOSPITAL ATTACK

12 people have been killed and up to 40 wounded, on Monday 05/31/2010 evening, after gunmen, dressed in police uniforms, attacked a hospital in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore. Up to four gunmen briefly seized hostages at the hospital, before escaping (see also – Lahore Mosques 05.28.10 ).

Dozens of people were killed in hundreds wounded just 3 days earlier, in Friday’s attacks on mosques in the city were being treated in the facility at the time of the assault (see – Lahore 05.27.09). The authorities said they were pursuing the suspects after one was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with police.

The gunmen were said to have failed in an attempt to reach a captured militant, injured in the mosque attacks, who was being treated at the hospital.

Javed Ikram, chief executive of Jinnah hospital, told Reuters news agency that the gunmen had “barged into the hospital building and opened indiscriminate fire”.
