>

The FBI said , on Wednesday 10/27/2010, they has arrested Farooque  Ahmed, 34, a naturalized citizen from Pakistani descent, in a sting operation for allegedly attempting to plot multiple bombings of the Washington, D.C., subway stops.

A LinkedIn page that was created for Farooque  Ahmed identifies him as a network planning engineer with a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the City College of New York in 2003, during the same period that other records showed he had been living in New York. He lives in middle-class suburban comfort with his wife and their infant son. They held steady jobs in northern Virginia’s technology industry and mostly kept to themselves.

“Farooque  Ahmed, 34, of Ashburn, Va., was arrested today for attempting to assist others whom he believed to be members of Al Qaeda in planning multiple bombings at Metrorail stations in the Washington, D.C., area” The Dept. of Justice statement said.

“This is another important example of work by the FBI – by all levels of our law enforcement and by our national security team to keep our country safe. Those groups have been on top of this case from the beginning. And at no point was the public in any danger,” White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller (see in context – FBI Mumbai omission).

Farooque  Ahmed was indicted, on Tuesday 10/26/2010, with charges of attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization, collecting information to assist in planning a terrorist attack on a transit facility, and attempting to provide material support to carry out multiple bombings to cause mass causalities at a Washington-area Metro station.

According to the indictment, Farooque  Ahmed is accused of spending time from 04/2010 through 10/25/2010 helping people he believed to be Al Qaeda members (and were actually FBI informants) plan the bombings in order to kill and hurt many people. Farooque  Ahmed is accused of driving to a hotel in Dulles, on 04/18/2010, and meeting with a courier   he believed to be affiliated with a terrorist organization. The courier allegedly provided Farooque  Ahmed with a document that provided potential locations where future meetings could be held.

On or about 05/15/2010, at a hotel in Herndon, Farooque  Ahmed allegedly agreed to watch and photograph another hotel in Washington, D.C., as well as a Metro station in Arlington to get information about their security and busiest periods.

The indictment also states that Farooque  Ahmed allegedly participated in surveillance and recorded video images of Metro stations in Arlington on four occasions. On or about 07/19/2010, in a hotel room in Sterling,  Farooque  Ahmed is accused of handing a memory stick containing video of a Metro station in Arlington to a person he believed to be affiliated with Al Qaeda. On that same day, Farooque  Ahmed allegedly agreed to assess the security of two other Metro stations in Arlington as locations of terrorist attacks.

The indictment further alleges that, on or about 09/28/2010, in a hotel room in Herndon, Farooque  Ahmed gave a USB drive containing images and diagrams that Ahmed drew of three Metro stations in Arlington to a person he believed to be an Al Qaeda member and provided suggestions as to where explosives should be placed on trains in Metro stations in Arlington to kill the most people in simultaneous attacks planned for 2011, the indictment claimed (see also – Is US Safe). .
According to the FBI, on Thursday 10/28/2010, Farooque  Ahmed and an associate tried to contact a terror group to help them travel to Afghanistan or Pakistan to fight US.-led forces there. The FBI didn’t indicate how it learned about the alleged efforts to contact the group and didn’t identified the group (see also – Sargodha Arrests)..

* Farooque  Ahmed admitted in a plea bargain to conspiring to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization and to collecting information for a terrorist attack on a transit facility. He was sentenced, on Tuesday 04/12/2011, to 23 years in imprisonment.
