22 INJURED IN ISTANBUL SUICIDE BLAST

>

At least 22 people have been injured, on Sunday 10/31/2010 at about 11:00, in an attack carried out by a suicide bomber in the Turkish city of Istanbul, police said.

Huseyin Capkin, the police chief, said six of the injured in Sunday’s blast were civilians and nine were police. Two of the wounded were in a serious condition. The bomber blew himself up close to where the police were stationed in Taksim Square in the heart of the city’s shopping district.

A second bomb had been planted right next to the suicide bomber but did not go off but had it done so, with huge crowds gathered after the first explosion as you would expect, that bomb was designed to cause maximum damage, police expert said. Dual sequential bombings are typical to Al Qaeda. But suspicion is likely to fall on Kurdish separatist factions, or groups linked to Al Qaeda.

Following the blast, a security cordon was thrown round the area and the nearby Istiklal Street was closed off for pedestrians.
