ATTACK ON CHEVRON IN INDONESIA FOILED
An Islamist terror group on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island planned to attack foreign workers at unit of Chevron Corp’s as well as ambush tourists, a police official told Reuters on Monday 12/06/2010.
Indonesia has killed or detained scores of militants since the Bali ‘02 Bombings, though police and security experts have warned about potential threats to foreign and government targets from newly formed groups.
Militant groups have begun to change tactics away from bomb attacks to more focused, lower cost operations targeting individual foreigners and government officials.
Police said the Chevron unit that was targeted was at Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province, Sumatra’s main oil producing area (see also –Pekanbaru Bombing). The island’s Krakatau volcanic area also attracts scores of foreign visitors. . “In Anak Krakatau, they aim to intercept tourist speed-boats, kill them, and leave them there,” Petrus Golose, a member of police’s anti-terror task force said.
Chevron is the biggest producer of crude oil in Indonesia, a former OPEC member Anak Krakatau, or Child of Krakatoa, is a volcano formed on the site of the giant 1883 explosion of the Krakatoa volcano off the coast of eastern Sumatra, which draws tourists to see the active peak or to dive the coral-rich waters around it.
The plans were revealed by Fadli Sadama, 27, a man who was captured in Malaysia on 10/13/2010, and was taken at the weekend to Indonesia for trial, Petrus Golose said.
Fadil Sadama was jailed for more than four years in Indonesia for involvement in ferrying explosives for a car-bomb at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Jakarta in 2003, the police official said.
Soon after Fadil Sadama was released, he re-joined a militant group and robbed banks in north Sumatra to raise fund for future attacks against foreigners on the island, Petrus Golose said.
Some of the funds were also sent to a treasurer of Jemaah Anshorut Tauhid, an Islamist group in Java led by firebrand cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, Petrus Golose said.
Police have alleged that Bashir was involved in a paramilitary training camp in the jungle in Sumatra’s Aceh this year and said the new group had planned to assassinate President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at an Independence Day ceremony in Jakarta in August 2010 (see -Arrests 08.08.10 ).
