ISLAMIC NETWORK ARRESTED IN EUROPE

In a well coordinated operation, in many European countries, a network of 20 suspects was arrested on Tuesday 11/06/2007. 11 people were arrested in North Italy, in Milan – Bergamo and Reggio Emilia. The rest were arrested in France, Spain, UK – London and Manchester and Portugal. The suspects formed a Salafi group in Europe (see – Salafiya )

The network of Islamic militants, almost all of them illegal immigrants from North Africa – the Maghreb, mainly from Tunisia, was based in Milan and is suspected of recruiting young Muslim volunteers to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and raising money for this purpose. Some of the recruits were intended to become suicide bombers.

In the searches following the arrests police found in Italy poisons, remote explosive ignition devices and guerrilla warfare manuals. The detainees are also accused of falsifying identity documents and immigration offences.

Milan was a base for similar networks in the past (see Milan 01 Cell and Milan 03 Cell ) and is the main junction for Muslim volunteers heading Syria in order to join the War in Iraq.
