The 21st Century Phenomenon

Five men and a woman suspected of terrorism offences have been arrested, on Thursday 07/05/2012, in London as part of an intelligence-led investigation involving MI5. One of the six, who are aged between 18 and 30, was tasered by police. Eight homes in west, east and north London and one business are being searched (see – Londonstan).

It is understood the arrests relate to a possible plot involving Islamist extremists, with potential U.K targets. One of those arrested in Stratford is an ex-police community support officer. The person served with the Metropolitan Police for more than two years before resigning in September 2009. The Metropolitan Police said the arrests were not linked to the Olympics or Paralympic Games .

Security sources are describing the arrests as “significant”, but there is no suggestion at the moment of any imminent attack. It is understood that police involved in the long-running operation decided to act on Thursday on the grounds of public safety.

The UK terrorism threat level is unchanged from “substantial”, which means a terrorist attack is a “strong possibility”. There are two higher levels – “severe”, meaning an attack is “highly likely”, and “critical”, meaning an attack is “expected imminently”.

Some – if not all – of those arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism are British nationals, our correspondent adds.

They include a 21-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, who were detained at separate addresses in Ealing, west London, while a 29-year-old man was arrested in an Ealing street. The woman is married to one of the men. Three brother ,from Bangladeshi descent, were detained in Abbey Road, Stratford, east London, during the operation involving armed officers .They are Jahangir, 26, also known as Abu Khalid, an ex-police community support officer between 05/2007 and 09/2009, Mohammed, 24, and Moybur Alom, 18. The man who was tasered during his arrest did not need hospital treatment, police said. All six have been taken to a police station in south-east London.

Just a week earlier, on 06/28/2012, two other islamists were arrested in London over similar suspicions. It is obvious that the London Metropolitan Police, the Scotland Yard and the MI5 are not prepared to take any chances ahead of the Coming Olympic Games in London, scheduled to be opened on 07/27/2012 (see -Olympic Arrests 06.28.12).
* According to police sources one of the six detainees was identified as Rich Dart, also knows as Salahuddin al-Britani (from Britain) . He was detained in Ealing,West London and the one tasered by police during the arrest (see also – London Taleban).
* London Metropolitan police arrested yet another woman, 22, at a property in Hackney during the early hours of Saturday 07/07/2012 morning. She is being held on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism (see also – Olympic Arrests 07.06.12).

* Five of the suspect detainees: Richard Dart, 29, from Ealing; Jahangir Alom, 26, from Stratford; Imran Mahmood, 21, from Northolt; Khalid Baqa, 47, from Barking and Jahangir Alom’s wife Ruksana Begum (pic), 22, from Hoxton have been charged, on Wednesday 07/18/2012, with preparing for acts of terrorism while a man and a woman have been charged with possessing terrorist documents. Unlike the 4 other suspects Khalid Baqa was detained on Wednesday and was the eighth suspect arrested in the affair.

Richard Dart, Imran Mahmood and Jahangir Alom are charged that “between 25 July 2010 and 6 July 2012, with the intention of committing acts of terrorism or assisting another to commit such acts, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention”. They are alleged to have travelled to Pakistan and elsewhere for “training in terrorism” and to have provided information to others about how to obtain terrorism training in Pakistan. Ruksana Begum has been charged with possession of a document likely to be of use to a terrorist, using a micro SD card which contains documents entitled Inspire 8, Inspire 9 Winter 2012 Edition, and Shahida and Al-Fidous (see also – Inspire-5 edition).

Khalid Baqa has been charged with three counts of possession of terrorist material and one count of dissemination of terrorist material. He is alleged to have been in possession of CDs containing a document entitled 39 Ways to Support and Participate in Jihad, as well as a number of issues of INSPIRE MAGAZINE.

 * Ruksana Begum, 22, the sister of Gurukanth Desai and Abdul-Malik Miah and the wife of Jahangir Alom was jailed at the Old Bailey for a year, in 12/2012, for having Al Qaeda terrorist material in her mobile phone (see – London Stock-Exchange Plot).
* Richard Dart and his two accomplices: Jahangir Alom (1) of Stratford, East London and Imran Mahmood (2) of Northolt, North West London, admitted via videolink from Woodhill prison in Buckinghamshir, on Saturday 03/16/2013, that between 07/2010 and 07/2012 they had traveled to Pakistan for terror training, gone abroad to commit atrocities, and provided other potential terrorists with information on how to get the same training in Pakistan.
