SHOOTOUT WITH MILITANTS IN TURKEY LEAVES 9 DEAD
–
Just 6 days before the general election in Turkey and in a very tense atmosphere, two policemen and up to seven suspected alleged Islamic State (ISIS) militants were killed in a shootout in southeast Turkey, security officials said on Monday 10/26/2015 ( see Payback )..
Police were carrying out dawn raids on houses in the city of Diyarbakir, actually the stronghold and political capital of the Turkish Kurds, where militants were thought to be hiding.
Turkey has stepped up operations against ISIS since the group was blamed for twin blasts that killed more than 100 people in Ankara this month. Reports say the clashes in Diyarbakir are continuing.
AFP news agency says this is the first clash with IS militants on Turkish soil since Turkey launched airstrikes on ISIS targets in neighbouring Syria in 07/2015 although those airstrikes targeted almost only Kurdish fighters. .
Two officers were killed after booby-traps around one of the houses exploded, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported. Another five officers were injured.
There is a room for doubt whether the militants were, indeed, ISIS fighters or Turkish PKK Kurdish fighters , .
