MOURAD BENCHELALI DETAINED AT TORONTO AIRPORT

Europe Lessons of Jihad* Mourad Benchelalli, born on 07/07/1981. He is the son of Chelali Benchelali and the brother of Menad Benchelalli from the Lyon Cell, France,  was captured by American forces in Afghanistan, in an Al Qaeda training camp  in operation “Absolute Justice” and sent to Guantanamo where he was an inmate from 01/2002 to 05/2004. He was released, eventually, from French jail  in 02/2009 without any final  conviction.

Mourad Benchelali, a French national and former Guantanamo Bay inmate, was detained by Canadian police at a Toronto airport on Monday on his way to a conference, his lawyer said on Wednesday 11/04/2015.

Mourad Benchellali was previously stopped from boarding a flight to Canada in June because he is still on the U.S. government’s no-fly list and the plane would have passed through U.S. airspace.

Mourad Benchellali, who turns anti-extremism activist, was set to attend a conference in Canada on preventing radicalization in prisons, but local authorities still consider him a “threat to national security,” Radio-Canada reported.The Toronto-based filmmaker Eileen Thalenberg.  who had invited Benchellali to Canada to be part of a documentary she is producing said he was now detained in a maximum security prison. For the past two years he has been involved in an initiative to stop young people from joining terror groups in Syria, according to his supporters.
