HIZBULLAH AGENT FAWZI ASSI PLEADED GUILTY

* Fawzi  Mustapha Assi, born in 1960, pleaded guilty on 11/29/2007, in federal court in Detroit to attempting to provide support to a terrorist organization.

Fawzi M. Assi was accused of a failed 1998 attempt to deliver global positioning systems and night-vision goggles to Hizbullah in Lebanon, after USA State Department designated Hizbullah a terrorist group in 1997.

Fawzi M. Assi was stopped in 07/1998 when he attempted to board a flight from Detroit to Lebanon with two Boeing co-manufactured global positioning system kits, night vision goggles and a thermal-imaging camera.

In his plea, Fawzi M. Assi admitted he was attempting to deliver the equipment to a person in Lebanon, who he knew was buying the gear for Hezbollah.

In an earlier hearing, FBI agents testified that Fawzi M. Assi had told them during questioning that he supported Hizbullah’s goal of driving Israel out of Southern Lebanon.

Fawzi M. Assi fled to Lebanon shortly after his arrest in 1998. He returned to the United States and surrendered to authorities in 05/2004 and is held in custody since then.

Fawzi M. Assi is a naturalized U.S citizen, who came to the United States in 1978. He worked as an engineer with Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford Motor Co. Fawzi M. Assi faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 as part of his plea bargain.
