The 21st Century Phenomenon

A former US soldier, Eric Omar Harroun, 30, has been charged, on 03/28/2013, with using a weapon outside the USA as he fought against Syrian government forces, prosecutors say (see – SYRIAN DILEMA ).

Eric Harroun of Phoenix, Arizona, was arrested Tuesday night by the FBI at a hotel near Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. A Justice Department official said that FBI agents questioned Eric Harroun at the hotel, then took him into custody. Eric Harroun appeared Thursday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, and was charged in connection with his alleged use of a rocket-propelled grenade in Syria.
An FBI affidavit says Harroun crossed into Syria in January 2013 and fought against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces. He posted photos and videos of himself on the Internet handling RPGs and other weapons, it said. Eric Harroun told the FBI he was in Syria for about 25 days fighting from seven to 10 battles with Al-Nusra against the forces of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
On 03/12/2013 Eric Harroun testified, voluntarily, in the USA embassy in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, and provided information from his own free will, related to his Syrian tour. Eric Harroun told the FBI, “He hated Al Qaeda, did not know any Al Qaeda members, and would fight any regime if it imposed Sharia law in Syria.”  He was not warned that the information he provided will be used against him later on.
Eric Harroun served in the US Army from 2000-2003, and allegedly fought in Syria with the Jabhat al-Nusra (The victorious Front). After leaving the US army Eric Harroun converted to Islam and has, reportedly, embraced Islamic fanaticism.
