An Air France flight AF-463, on Sunday 12/20/2015, carrying 459 passengers and 14 crew members and had left Mauritius at 01:00 to Paris has been forced to make an emergency landing in Mombasa. Kenya after a suspect package was found on board.
The pilots of the Boeing 777 requested to land at Moi International Airport in Mombasa after the package was discovered in the toilet.
The aircraft was safely evacuated and the item is now being examined by bomb experts, police spokesman Charles Owino said. It had been due to fly directly to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.
.Bomb experts from the Kenyan Navy and police force were called in and took the device away to be dismantled and establish whether it contained explosives. Eventually the bomb was a fake . Two suspects from flight 463 were questioned by Kenyan security forces.
** According Air France chief Frederic Gagey, later on the day. the device was made of a cardboard, sheets of paper and some kind of kitchen timer, and had been placed in a cupboard in a toilet., saying the device contained no explosives, so would not have been detected. The cupboard had been checked before the flight so it was assumed that it was put there during the flight, he said.
Mr Gagey told a news conference that the airline would press charges against those responsible and an inquiry would be held.
*** Media reports said a 58-year-old former police officer who lives on the French island of Reunion, which like Mauritius lies in the Indian Ocean. was arrested in French as flight AF-463 landed in Paris and Police are also questioning his wife as a witness.
The man was seen making several trips to the plane’s toilets before the suspect device was discovered, members of the plane’s crew told police. The man was seen making several trips to the plane’s toilets before the suspect device was discovered, members of the plane’s crew told police.
But on Monday 12/21/2015 evening, the prosecutor’s office told AFP: “The current state of the investigation does not justify keeping him in detention. The office added that it is “continuing its inquiry”.
Sunday’s alert was the third time an Air France flight has been diverted because of a bomb scare since the massacre of 130 people by Islamist extremists in the French capital last month. Although nobody was physically hurt the accumulation of events of that kind has their own negative impact on commercial and civil aviation .
