14 KILLED IN EGYPT’S TERROR ATTACKS
Hours after 5 policemen have been killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the North of Egypt’s restive Sinai peninsula, in El-Arish district, on Thursday 01/21/2016 morning, a bomb blast killed 9 more people including 3 policemen Thursday afternoon as a team of officers raided an apartment in Cairo, Giza neighborhood, suspected to be a militant hideout, police said.
The explosion near a road that leads to the site of the ancient Egyptian pyramids in the Cairo suburb of Giza, came ahead of Monday’s 01/25/2016 fifth anniversary of the 2011 revolution that ousted longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Fifteen people were wounded.
Security officials said the impact of the explosion damaged part of the residential building housing the apartment.
Islamist militants have stepped up attacks on Egyptian soldiers, police and Tourist sites since the army toppled president Mohammed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 after mass protests against his rule. Civilians have also been killed.
The Islamic State , Ansar Bait al-Maqdis , claimed responsibility for both attacks.
