14 ISLAMIC MILITANTS ARRESTED IN BELGIUM
The Belgian police arrested on 12/21/2007, before dawn, in a coordinated swoop, 14 Islamic militants who were under surveillance. The militants are suspects of planning an attack with firearms and explosives on a prison near Brussels in order to release Nizar Trabelsi and other Jihady inmate operatives kept in prison.
“There are indications that a terrorist attack could be in preparation,” the Prime Minister, Guy Verhofstadt, said at news conference.
Precaution security was being stepped up at public sites including airports, subway stations and Christmas markets, although the authorities said they were not aware of a specific threat.
All 14 suspects were released after 24 hours without any charges in what seems to be overreaction on misunderstanding of information.
