IMAM SAMUDRA
Abdul Aziz, nick name Imam Samudra, was born on 01/04/1970 in Serang, West Java, Indonesia raised by a single mother as one of 12.
As a child Imam Samudra was a very good student. He graduated from his Islamic school with excellence in the late 80s’. According to his mother, Imam Samudra left home in 1990 and did not return for a decade – and then only for a few hours before disappearing again.
When he left home Imam Samudra went to Malaysia and joined the Islamic school run by Abu Bakar Bashir in South Malaysia where he associated also with Hambali. The school soon became the breeding ground for future INDONESIAN JI senior activists.
In 1991 Imam Samudra traveled to Afghanistan for military training. Imam Samudra, allegedly, assisted INDONESIAN JI operations chief Hambali in organizing and financing the bombings of 24 churches in Indonesia, on December 24, 2000, which killed 19 people and injured more than 100.
Imam Samudra, allegedly, participated in the bomb attack on a Jakarta shopping mall on 08/01/2001, by providing explosives and detonators to two men who carried out the attack. Imam Samudra was never charged on that matter. His direct role in the INDONESIAN JI was unclear. Imam Samudra was also on the wages list of Reda Seyam, uncovered by the Indonesian intelligence in early 09/2002.
In 10/2002 Imam Samudra was the direct coordinator and commander of the Bali ‘02 Bombings. He was arrested on 11/21/2002. Imam Samudra was sentenced to death on 09/10/2003, alongside Ali Amrozi and Ali Ghufron, and welcomed his death in court. The sentenced was later suspended for some time.
Imam Samudra was executed by a firing squad on Sunday 11/09/2008 dawn along with Ali Amrozi and Ali Ghufron.
