The 21st Century Phenomenon

* Ali Qaed Senyan al-Harthi known also as Abu  Ali al-Harthi was born in Yemen, probably in the late 60’s.

In the late 80s’ Abu  Ali al-Harthi fought alongside Osama Bin laden in Afghanistan. After the war ended, in 1989, he became a close associate of Osama Bin Laden when he moved to Sudan in 1991. It is assumed that in 1996, when Osama Bin Laden moved with his staff to Afghanistan, Abu  Ali al-Harthi returned to Yemen.

Abu  Ali al-Harthi was considered the Al Qaeda’s top operative in Yemen. He was the chief executer of the failed YEMEN MILLENNIUM plot to attack the USS The Sullivans, with a suicide speed boat loaded with explosives, in the Gulf of Aden on 01/03/2000. He also executed the attack on the USS Cole on 10/12/2000 and the Limburg Attack on 10/06/2002.

In the summer of 2001, after the USS Cole attack, Abu  Ali al-Harthi, along with Muhammad Hamdi al-Ahdal – another USS Cole bombing suspect, moved to the village of al-Hosun in the Yemeni province of Marib, the mountainous area east of the capital Sanaa.

In 12/2001 a Yemeni Special forces squad located the trail of the two fugitives and raided the village of al-Hosun. The assault on al-Hosun ended in a bloodbath, with the death of 18 soldiers and six tribesmen. Both suspects: Abu  Ali al-Harthi and Muhammad Hamdi al-Ahdal, got away.

Abu Ali al-Harthi was killed in a car with five of his cell associates – Kamal Derwish, and other four Al Qaeda operatives on 11/03/2002, by a missile from an UAVUnmanned Aerial Vehicle, on a road 160 km east of the Yemeni capital Sanaa, in Marib province.
