FRENCH POLICE OFFICER STABBED TO DEATH BY ISIS SUPPORTER

A man, later identified as Larossi Abballa (pic), claiming allegiance to so-called Islamic State (ISIS) stabbed a French police commander , later identified as Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, 42, to death before being killed when police stormed a house late Monday 05/13/2016 at about 21:00 local timet, officials have said. Larossi Abballa then, on the scene of the attack, shot video as he carried out the attack and broadcast it on Facebook Live
The attacker took the officer’s partner, Jessica Schneider. who was herself an official in a police station, and their son hostage in their home in Magnanville, near Paris. The partner was found dead but the child was rescued. The officers discovered the body of a woman in the house later identified as the assailant’s wife.
Islamic State’s Amaq news agency said an ISIS “fighter” carried out the attack.
Witnesses quoted by AFP said that the knife-wielding man may have shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is greater) when he attacked the 42-year-old policeman, who was not in uniform, outside his home. The attacker then went inside the house and took a woman and child hostage.
He is reported to have claimed allegiance to ISIS while talking to police negotiators.
Interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said negotiations had been unsuccessful and a decision had been made to “launch an assault” at about midnight.
A source later told AFP: “The anti-terror department of the Paris prosecution service is taking into account at this stage the mode of operation, the target and the comments made during negotiations with the Raid.”
The victims have not yet been named. Magnanville is about 55 km (35 miles) North-West of the French capital.
** French media say the attacker, believed to be 25-year-old Larossi Abballa, had been sentenced in 2013 for involvement with jihadist groups with links to Pakistan.
Larossi Abballa, lived in nearby Mantes-La-Jolie and was convicted for “criminal association with the aim of preparing terrorist acts”. He was sentenced to a three-year term, with six months suspended, they said.
