9 THAI SOLDIERS KILLED IN THE SOUTH

>

A Thai army patrol in Narathiwat province, on the Southern border with Malaysia, was ambushed on 01/14/2008 morning by Patani-Raya Islamic separatist group.

9 Thai soldiers were killed in the ambush. More than 2,500 people have been killed since the violence escalated in South Thailand since early 2004.

The soldiers were escorting local teachers to schools after teachers were targeted several times. The Islamic rebels perceive the teachers as a symbol of domination by Thailand’s majority Buddhist population.  The Soldiers were on they way back to camp when their car was attacked by a roadside bomb and gunfire.

In 2007, US-based group Human Rights Watch warned that the insurgency in South Thailand was turning increasingly brutal, with majority of innocent civilian victims.

In the next day, on 01/15/2007, 27 people were injured when bomb, hidden in a motorbike, exploded at a busy market in near-by Yala province.
