The 21st Century Phenomenon

– Sayed  Perwiz Kambakhsh, a 23 year old journalist for the local Jahan-e Naw (New World) from Balkh province in North Afghanistan, on the border with Uzbekistan, was arrested in 2007  because of downloading material from the internet related to the role of women in Islamic societies.

On 01/23/2008 Sayed  Perwiz Kambakhsh was sentenced to death in Balkh provincial court for distributing “blasphemous” material as the court described it.  The court also claimed that Sayed  Perwiz Kambakhsh had confessed to blasphemy and threatened to arrest any reporters who protested against the sentence.

Shamsur Rahman, the head of the court, told Reuters news agency: “According to… the Islamic law, Sayed  Perwiz is sentenced to death at the first court”. Shamsur Rahman ignored the new “Democratic” laws of Afghanistan, under President Hamid Karzai, as if they did not exist .

The sentence raises the question if Afghanistan is really moving toward democracy or it is only a façade without any substance and the Afghan society remains the same as it was under the Taliban regime.
