The 21st Century Phenomenon

Abu Laith Al-Libi, the Libyan, a senior Al Qaeda leader who acted as a spokesman and was in charge of the relations with the media, was killed, according to speculations, by a USA missile strike in the North Waziristan area of Pakistan early this week, probably on 01/28/2008. Abu Laith Al-Libi was on America’s most-wanted list and had a $200,000 bounty on his head.

Pakistani intelligence officials said 13 people had died in the missiles attack – seven Arabs and six Central-Asians.

A Pakistani daily paper, the News, reported that the US strike was aimed at Abu Laith Al-Libi and another senior figure – Abu Obaidah al-Masri.

Abu Laith Al-Libi was born in Libya in the 60s’, he was linked to the LIBYAN Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), an organization set up with the aim of overthrowing LIBYAN leader Muammar Gaddafi. In the 80s’ Abu Laith Al-Libi, as so many radical Islamists in the Muslim world, fled Libya to Afghanistan to join the Mujahidin (Holy Warriors) in the war against the Russian. He fought in Afghanistan, with the Taliban, in the early 1990s.

In 1994 Abu Laith Al-Libi returned to Libya to lay the groundwork for a coup attempt against Muamar Gaddafi’s government. The plot failed and Abu Laith Al-Libi fled to Saudi Arabia where he was arrested in the aftermath of the 1996 Khobar Towers bombings. He was released after a short time and returned to Afghanistan. After Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda moved to Afghanistan in 1998 Abu Laith Al-Libi began, gradually, to cooperate with Al-Qaeda and, eventually joined the organization in 1999.

After operation ‘Absolute Justice’ in 12/2001 Abu Laith Al-Libi became the most presentable figure in Al-Qaeda. He was often interviewed on deferent Islamic sites and appeared alongside Al Qaeda leaders in video footages he managed to broadcast. After mid 2003 and the capture of Khalid Shaik Mohammed  and Abu Zubaydah , Abu Laith Al-Libi became, probably, no 3’ in Al-Qaeda and a senior field commander in Afghanistan.

In 07/2002 Abu Laith Al-Libi revealed that Osama Bin Laden was still alive – the first comment about the Al Qaeda leader’s health after ‘Absolute Justice’ operation.  Then in 06/2004, Abu Laith Al-Libi was shown leading an attack on what appears to be an Afghan military outpost and calling for Jihad.

According to US intelligence Abu Laith Al-Libi was behind a suicide bombing in 02/2007 which killed 23 people at the American base at Bagram during a visit by US Vice President Dick Cheney. (See-Dadullah Akhund )

Abu Laith Al-Libi appeared, the last time, on 11/27/2007, in a broadcasted videotape alongside Ayman Al Zawahiri, in which they announced that the ephemeral LIBYAN Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) is joining Al Qaeda. (See – LIBYAN GROUP ) .

In a 12 minutes video posted in the web, on 02/07/2008 morning, Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, described as Al-Qaeda’s commander in Afghanistan, vowed revenge for Abu Laith Al-Libi’s killing. “The men he trained … will not rest until they avenge him and realise his aspirations and hopes, God willing”– Mustafa Abu al-Yazid said.
