The 21st Century Phenomenon

On Tuesday 02/12/2008 noon, the Danish police announced the arrest of three Muslims from the town of Arhus suspected of planning to attack a cartoonist who drew caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. The suspects were identified as a 40-year-old Dane of Moroccan origin and two Tunisian citizens.

According to the Danish security service – PET, the arrest was carried out “after lengthy surveillance” and meant “to prevent a murder linked to terrorism”. The Danish citizen is charged with a terrorism offense, the intelligence service said, and the Tunisians will be deported. Police have not yet released the names of the three.

The online edition of Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper that published the Muhammad Cartoons , on 09/30/2005 in Denmark , the target of the plot was the cartoonist himself, Kurt Westergaard, who is under police protection.

Newspapers in Denmark, on Wednesday 02/13/2008,  reprinted, in response, the controversial cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed that sparked worldwide protests two years ago.

Berlingske Tidende, one of the newspapers involved in the republication, said: “We are doing this to document what is at stake in this case, and to unambiguously back and support the freedom of speech that we as a newspaper always will defend”.
