JAMES YEE
* Army Capt. James Yee, also known as Yusuf Yee, was born in 1968 in New Jersey, USA, to a family from Chinese descent. James Yee graduated from West Point in 1990. He converted from Christianity to Islam in 1991 and traveled to Syria for religious training. In Syria James Yee met his wife Huda, a Palestinian, with whom he has two children.
James Yee was appointed as chaplain for Muslim detainees at Guantanamo in early 2002. He was awarded two distinguishes service medals for his work at camp Delta with suspected Taliban and al Qaeda detainees. On 09/10/2003 James Yee was arrested, when a U.S. Customs agent found a list of Guantanamo detainees and interrogators among his belongings, initially, on suspicion of espionage and aiding the enemy. These charges were later reduced to mishandling classified information in addition to some minor charges.
All court-martial charges against Yee were dropped on 03/19/2004 and he was released to resume his duties but recharged for adultery and storing pornography on government computer. These charges were, eventually dismissed too. James Yee left the US military with an honorable discharge in 01/2005. During his work in Guantanamo James Yee got acquainted with Ahmed Mehalba.
On 10/2005 James Yee published his book ‘For God and Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire’. On 10/19/2007 the Syrian TV broadcast an interview with James Yee, in Arabic, where he repeated detainees’ claims of Koran abuse on the part of the U.S. military.
Today (05/2008) James Yee is a free citizen of USA, he was never convicted on terror or espionage related charges.
