ABU YAHYA AL-LIBI & THE BAGRAM ESCAPEES

* Mohammad Hassan Abu Bakar was born in 1963 in Libya and was a member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group – LIFG. He was known as a talented speaker who used to recruit Arabs for Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan and encouraged them to fight the Jihad.

On 07/11/2005 Mohammad Hassan Abu Bakar took part in the Bagram Escape. He was probably the ringleader of the escape and got the nickname Sheik Abu Yahya al-Libi.

In 12/2005, about five months after his escape, a video footage with him was posted on the net in which Abu Yahya al-Libi encouraged Islamic fighters in Afghanistan to carry on the Jihad.

On 05/09/2006 Abu Yahya al-Libi published on the net, in the Tora Bora magazine, the story of the successful escape from Bagram (which is probably only partially true) and a series of advices to other militants how to use his experience to facilitate their escape from jail.

On 10/10/2006, in yet another audiotape, Abu Yahya al-Libi called upon Islamic fighters to target directly the White House in Washington. Therefore USA authorities had set a $1 million reward for information leading to the capture of Abu Yahya al-Libi.

Today (06/2008) Mohammad Hassan – Abu Yahya al-Libi is still at large. His deeds or whereabouts are unknown to any Western Intelligence. (see – Footage 01.22.09 ).

* On 12/11/2009 there were reports that Abu Yahya al-Libi was killed in a USA UAV missile attack in Pakistan but the senior al Qaeda killed in the attack was identified, eventually, as Saleh al-Somali.

** Abu Yahya al-Libi was re-targeted by USA UAV missile attack in FATA, North Waziristan, Mir Ali region, on Monday 06/04/2012 dawn. He was described by the Americans as the deputy of the new Al Qaeda leader Ayman Al Zawahiri. Reports from Islamabad said it would be difficult to immediately confirm Libi’s death. About 15 other foreign fighters or innocent by passers were killed in the attack. Eventually an U.S. official confirmed, on Tuesday 06/05/2012, that a Monday drone strike in Pakistan, indeed, killed Abu Yahya al-Libi.
