JALALUDDIN HAQQANI
* Jalaluddin Haqqani was born in 1950 and is an ethnic Pashtu from North Waziristan, in Pakistan’s FATA region. He speaks also fluent Arabic.
In the 70s’ Jalaluddin Haqqani was a senior associate of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar in forming the Hezb-i islami (Islamic Party), which was linked to the Pakistani intelligence – ISI.
In the 1980s, Jalaluddin Haqqani was cultivated as a “unilateral” asset of the CIA and received millions of dollars in cash for his work in fighting the Soviet Union Army in Afghanistan. At that time Jalaluddin Haqqani worked closely with Osama bin Laden, who was building his own militia to fight the Soviet forces. Jalaluddin Haqqani became one of the most legendary Islamic commanders in the war against the Russians in Afghanistan.
Jalaluddin Haqqani base of operation was in North Waziristan, FATA region of Pakistan, and he became the sponsor of Baitullah Mehsud.
Like many Pashtu leaders, Jalaluddin Haqqani switched sides during the civil war in Afghanistan in the years 1991-1996. In 1996 he allied himself to the Taliban and from 1997 served as the military commander of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital.
After operation Absolute Justice in Afghanistan in 12/2001 Jalaluddin Haqqani retreated with his followers back to North Waziristan. According to USA intelligence sources he also facilitated the successful escape of Osama Bin Laden from Tora Bora to Pakistan in 12/2001.
Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president after operation Absolute Justice in 12/2001 in Afghanistan, in order to legitimize his regime, invited Jalaluddin Haqqani to be his Afghan first PM but Jalaluddin Haqqani rejected the offer. Jalaluddin Haqqani became a prime target for USA intelligence and Special Forces.
In Miranshah, North Waziristan, Jalaluddin Haqqani founded a Madrassa (Islamic religious school) which is used also to recruit young Muslims to the war in Afghanistan and against the Pakistani regime. The Madrassa was targeted, on Monday 09/08/2008 morning, by a USA UAV missile attack, which killed 17 people, some of them from Haqqani’s family (see – Miranshah 09.08.08 ). Jalaluddin Haqqani, the father of Sirajuddin Haqqani and Nasiruddin Haqqani, is considered the top leader and the local warlord of North Waziristan and a senior member in the Tehrik-e-Taleban (the Taliban’s Way), a coalition of over 30 Pakistani Islamic militant groups.
Jalaluddin Haqqani’s son, Mohammed Haqqani, was killed, on Friday 02/19/2010, in a UAV missile attack in North Waziristan, probably aimed to kill his other son Sirajuddin Haqqani.
* The USA, on Friday 09/07/2012, has formally designated the Haqqani network, accused of high-profile attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as a terrorist group, US officials have said.
* UN Security Council’s Taliban sanctions committee added, on 11/06/2012, the Pakistan-based Haqqani-Network to the UN blacklist.
* * Jalaluddin Haqqani died, in mid 2014, after a long illness and was buried in Afghanistan sources close to the group have told the BBC and published on 08/01/2015. Pakistani sources confirmed his death but remain in disagreement about the actual date of his death .
** Aziz Haqqani, the younger of the Haqqani brothers was designated by the USA, on 08/25/2015, “specially designated global terrorist,” According to the statement, Aziz Haqqani also “assumed responsibility for all major Haqqani Network attacks after the death of his brother, Badruddin Haqqani .” He already had a $5 million U.S. bounty on his head .
