MAKASSAR MC-DONALD BOMBING

>.

 –

On 12/04/2002 early evening, two bombs exploded in the McDonald restaurant, in the South Sulawesi provincial capital of Makassar, Indonesia. Three people, including one of the bombers identified as Ansar Daeng Salam, were killed in the McDonald’s blast and other wounded. The dead and injured were all Indonesians. The attack happened less than two months after the Bali ‘02 Bombings.

The next day, on 12/05/2002, the police launched raids on the Islamic radical ‘Laskar Jundullah’ (soldiers of God) group and arrested some of its activists. But eventually the police admitted the group had no links to the McDonald bombing.

Indeed 10 of the suspects who were arrested in connection with the Bali 02 bombings were also implicated in the Makassar McDonald bombing. According to Indonesia’s national police Chief General Da’i Bachtiar, in a press conference on 12/12/2002, a man called Agung Abdul Hamid was identified as one of the main instigators.

According to South Sulawesi police Chief Firman Gani, the network involved in the Makassar blast was also involved in bombings at Manado in North Sulawesi and at Poso in Central Sulawesi. He said the group had made 10 bombs so far and had used six. The remaining four are still in Hamid’s hands.

According to a partial police report, published on 12/24/2002, Agung Abdul Hamid, the ringleader, was reportedly helped by Ilham, Masnur, who was arrested on 12/15/2002 night, and Muchtar, who was arrested soon after the bombing. The last two are allegedly bomb-making experts. The group’s field operatives were Ansar Daeng Salam, who was himself killed in the blast, on 12/04/2002, and Usman.

Other members, Mirzal and Kahar Mustafa, supplied the detonators while Suryadi was named as the financer of the terrorist attacks.

On 08/15/2005 Agung Abdul Hamid, 38, was found guilty of being the “field coordinator and financier” of the Makassar McDonald and sentenced to life in prison.
