AGUNG ABDUL HAMID

* Agung  Abdul Hamid was born in 1968 in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. He was a veteran of the war in Afghanistan against the Russians in the late 80s’.  In the late 90s’ Agung  Abdul Hamid trained Islamic militants in Mindanao, Southern Philippines in a camp run by the INDONESIAN JI.  When he returned to Indonesia in the late 90s’ Agung  Abdul Hamid joined the ‘Laskar Jundullah’ (soldiers of God) which operated in Southern Sulawesi and whose leader Agus Dwikarna was sentenced by the Philippines to 17 years in prison for illegal possession of explosives. Agung  Abdul Hamid became the acting ringleader of ‘Laskar Jundullah’ in his region.

Agung  Abdul Hamid made his living in Makassar as a car dealer.  He was implicated as the prime suspect in the Makassar McDonald Bombing, on 12/04/2002.

Following the Makassar Bombing the ‘Laskar Jundullah’ base was raided by the Indonesian police on 12/05/2002, but Agung  Abdul Hamid managed to flee.  On 01/10/2003 The Indonesian police raided another base, described as a training camp of ‘Laskar Jundullah’, in Towuti Lake area in Luwu regency, some 500 kilometers north from Makassar, in yet another attempt to capture Agung  Abdul Hamid.

Eventually Agung  Abdul Hamid was arrested, on 01/10/2004, after a bomb exploded in a karaoke cafe in Palopo, Central Sulawesi, and killed four people. He was an accomplice of Jasmin, the Palopo bomber perpetrator.

On 08/15/2005 Agung  Abdul Hamid was found guilty of being the “field coordinator and financier” of the Makassar McDonald and sentenced to life in prison.
