– MOSCOW’S RED SQUARE BOMBING

On 12/09/2003 a Chechen female suicide bomber blew herself up near the National Hotel only a few hundred meters from the Kremlin in Moscow (see Black Widows). Six people were killed and 13 injured in the blast. Some intelligence sources suggested that the attack was intended for the near by Moscow City Hall or the Duma (Parliament).

The suicide bomber was identified as Khadishat Mangerieva, a Black Widow of a Chechen rebel commander of Kurshaloyevsky District, Ruslan Mangeriev, who was killed during the Second Chechen war, which began in 11/1999. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack happened just two days after parliamentary elections in Russia gave President Vladimir Putin and his allies an overwhelming victory, increasing the president’s hold on power.
