Abu Mansour Al-Amriki (from America) is a North American whose real name is Omar Hammami, was born in 05/1984 to a Muslim father from Syrian descent and an American Baptist mother. Omar Hammami was raised in Daphne, Alabama. He began to identify as a Muslim in high school and over time grew increasingly religious, with special interest in Salafism in Islam.
Omar Hammami was a student in the University of South Alabama from the fall of 2001 to the end of fall 2002 in computer science. Omar Hammami was president of the university’s Muslim Student Association right after The 9/11. He dropped out of college in 2002, and, in 2004, he moved to Toronto, Canada, where he soon married a Somali-Canadian woman.
In 06/2005 the couple moved to Cairo, Egypt, where their daughter was born. Through an internet forum, Omar Hammami met Daniel Maldonado, who was also living in Egypt, and the two secretly made plans to leave for Somalia. Without telling his family, Omar Hammami travelled to Somalia in 11/2006 and apparently joined al-Shabab soon after.
Omar Hammami joined Islamic militant group in Somalia using the name Abu Mansour Al-Amriki. After moving to Somalia, Abu Mansour Al-Amriki became a high-ranking member of Al Qaeda’s East Africa leadership, and was a lead trainer for Somali insurgent forces in the late 90s’. Omar Hammami got acquainted, probably, in Somalia, in 2006, with Daniel Maldonado.
Abu Mansour Al-Amriki appeared in the last years, often, in video footages appealing to young Muslims in the Western Democracies, and especially USA, to join the Global Jihad. He might be related to the Minneapolis Network by encouraging young Muslims from Somali descent to return to Somalia to fight the Jihad.
On 03/31/2009, the media division of the Somali jihadist group al-Shabab Al-Mujahideen released a 31-minute video featuring ”Abu Mansour Al-Amriki” – an American commander in Jihad service.
On 04/05/2009, Abu Mansour Al-Amriki appeared in the Recruiting Footage posted in a Somali website, in which he said: “The only reason we are staying here, away from our families, away from the cities, away from candy bars [and] all these other things is because we are waiting to meet with the enemy…If you can encourage more of your children, and more of your neighbors, and anyone around you to send people … to this Jihad, it would be a great asset for us”.
The two videos indicated that Abu Mansour Al-Amriki became a front figure for al-Shabab in its effort to recruit Muslims in the West to Jihad (see also – Cabdulaahi Ahmed Faarax

“To whomever it may reach from the Muslims, from Abu Mansoor al-Amriki, I record this message today because I feel that my life may be endangered by Harakat Shabab al-Mujahideen due to some differences that occurred between us regarding matters of the Shariaa (Islamic law) and matters of the strategy,” he said, speaking in English.
Omar Hammami began to distance himself from al-Shabab, and the former blunt Jihadi spokesman began to distribute, through twitter account and web footage, in Hip-Hop stile, in which he criticized and even slandered the organization.
Since late 2012 Omar Hammami has accused al-Shabab leaders, repeatedly, of everything from incompetence, to betraying Islamic principles to mistreating the foreign fighters who have joined the fight against the Western-backed government in Somalia. He has written that the group has illegally taxed Muslims and harmed people for minor infractions while ignoring major violations of Islamic law in other cases.
