THE DISGRACE

 >

All through history burning books was the indication to a fanatic, totalitarian and radical approach. When committed by regimes it was always the initial sign to atrocities and discrimination down of the road. It was the case when Nazis burned books written by Jews in 1933 or when Chinese burn their own classics in the “Cultural Revolution” in the late 1960s’.

Although radical Islam is a major threat to the Western Democracies – Islam as a religion throughout history led to tremendous achievements in science, mathematics, urban planning, navigation, astronomy and you name it. The Islamic world, unlike the Christian world was, historically, much more tolerant to Christians and Jews then vice versa. The holocaust was carried out in the Christian World by Christians and during a period of 31 years, from 08/1914 up to 05/1945 100 millions Europeans were killed and slaughtered by fellow Christians in the double World Wars.

Today Islam is in crisis and the first to suffer are Muslims themselves. For any non Muslim killed by Jihadist in the world more the 40 Muslims are killed by their own fellow Muslims. Radical Islam is mainly an inner conflict in Islam and, although for the moment, the radical extremists seems to dominate the Islamic public dialog there is in Islam a growing influence of moderate clerics who fight the extremists through the mind and hearts of Muslims much more efficiently then Western efforts to do so (see – Fatwa 03.31.10). Eventually the radical Islam will be overcome by Muslims and not by Western military or economic power.

The plan of Rev. Terry Jones, the head of a small church of about 50 followers, in Gainesville, Florida, to burn copies of the Quran on the 9th anniversary of The 9/11 is an extremely dangerous move which belongs to dark ages of fanatic views and hate and is also unchristian since Christianity, more than any other religion, advocates “forgiveness”.

The move is also extremely damaging to the prospect of overcoming Islamic radicalization since it cannot but unite moderates with radicals against the malicious act of burning the Quran. Eventually there is no power in the world that can overcome the hate and anger of 1.4 billion Muslims and if the event will really take place it will be a major setback to all relatively successful efforts to contain the radical Islamic threat.

Radical people are always a sort of threat mainly to their own society, whether they are Muslims, Jews or Christians and so is Rev. Terry Jones. He is not by any means a threat to Islam or to Radical Islam but a threat mainly to America and the Western Democracies.
